It was a trial by fire—there were countless obstacles ahead of me, but I was determined to succeed. Through the challenges, I found fulfillment in using those hard-earned lessons to guide others on their own journeys. My career in real estate began in 2007—it was one of the hardest times to start a career in an industry that was essentially falling apart. I had three young kids at home and was the sole income for the household. But I had experience in marketing and sales from working with large home builders like D.R. Horton Homes and Richmond American Homes, so I thought, why not use those skills to build a business for myself?
A Sink-or-Swim Situation
When I decided to go out on my own and get my real estate license, it was definitely a sink-or-swim situation. The success rate for new real estate agents is notoriously low. I knew I couldn’t just rely on my network or expect people to use me because I was new and eager. I had to set myself apart, and quickly! I had to hustle like I never had before. I built a client base by being aggressive but also by leveraging the marketing skills I had honed over the years. I understood how to market homes effectively, even in a tough market.
Personally, I wasn’t immune to the struggles of that time either. Like so many others, I made an investment that didn’t pan out and ended up having to short-sell the property. Going through that experience myself gave me a deep empathy for my clients who were facing similar challenges. I knew firsthand how stressful and overwhelming it could be, and that understanding allowed me to better support and guide them through the process. It also taught me a crucial lesson about the importance of carefully evaluating investments and ensuring the numbers work realistically, not just optimistically.
Resilience and Persistence
The market was flooded with short sales and foreclosures, and I had to dive right into that world. I helped clients navigate those tricky transactions, and for those fortunate enough, use it as an opportunity to invest. Many of those clients have held onto those properties and have seen incredible returns, which is something I take a lot of pride in.
One of the biggest lessons I learned during that time was the importance of resilience and persistence. The market was brutal, but I weathered those four years and emerged stronger. I realized early on that I had to constantly create business and stand out in a crowded field, which set a high standard for the service I provide. Even after nearly 17 years, the greatest reward is my clients’ satisfaction. I’m proud of the strong reputation I’ve maintained, with five-star reviews on Zillow and Google reflecting that my clients feel valued and well-served. On a personal level, real estate has given me the flexibility to be present for my kids and embrace traveling. We’ve had some very memorable experiences, like taking my kids to Costa Rica and exploring the Isle of Skye in Scotland. I also make time for my passions, like tennis and hiking. These adventures keep me grounded and remind me of the importance of balance in life.
It’s been amazing to see my kids grow and succeed in their own endeavors. My daughter is about to start a graduate program to become a therapist. My oldest son just graduated from college and is doing a year of grad school, while my youngest, at 22, is already a homeowner and works as a real estate photographer.
Never Giving Up
Looking back, starting my real estate career during one of the toughest times in history taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of never giving up. It’s also made me a better REALTOR® and investor. Whether it’s helping my clients find their dream homes or mentoring my own kids through their life choices, I feel incredibly grateful for the lessons learned on this journey and how I can use them to help others. With over 20 years of experience in the Denver market, I’ve navigated everything from booming markets to challenging downturns, low interest rates to high ones. My extensive background has equipped me with the knowledge and adaptability to meet the unique needs of my clients, no matter the market conditions. I specialize in working with a diverse range of clients, including traditional buyers and sellers, along with fix-and-flip investors and builders. As an investor myself, and owner of Posh Property of Denver, I pride myself on understanding all sides of the transaction process, connecting with my clients, and helping find the best solution for their specific needs.
What keeps me passionate about real estate is that I love a challenge—whether it’s negotiating a deal or using the latest marketing technologies to showcase a property. I thrive on finding solutions to problems throughout the process, but more importantly, I love the satisfaction of helping people. Whether it’s seeing the joy on a client’s face when they find their dream home or receiving heartfelt thanks after a successful sale, these moments make all the hard work worthwhile!
